Long before the first foursome played Erin Hills, nature sported here. As the Ice Age receded 10,000 years ago, rivers of water from the melting glaciers carved out the rough contours of the land. A rolling hill here, a broad plain there, it is as if the terrain was destined to become a championship golf course.
Inspired by the classic Scottish and Irish courses that were once built by horse-drawn plows, Erin Hills has been created in harmony with the land. Centuries of farming kept the land in its pristine condition, and comparatively little human intervention was required. Its architects—Mike Hurdzan, Dana Fry and Ron Whitten, found the best eighteen holes and linked them together. Construction began in 2004 and the first round was played in 2006.
